Gresso Luxury Phone = £expensive

Luxury cellphone maker Gresso keeps churning out more and more expensive handsets. With their first models they were content with African Blackwood and some golden plating on the back. Then came Gresso Avantgarde Sol collection, with the keypad keys made from gold.
But there ain’t no luxury handset out there, that can be made exclusive and expensive enough for a proper millionaire. Still Gresso seems to try real hard.
This this time they decided to replace golden keys with diamonds. And no ordinary diamonds, but extremely rare and expensive black diamonds to boot.

Their first attempt Gresso Avantgarde Black Diamonds phone (on the right) is a valid try. For just a 9000 Euro you get your African Blackwood phone with golden keypad and four navigation keys replaced wit black diamonds. But it’s really nothing special, I say.

In this phone all your keypad keys will be made from black diamonds of 2.53K. And, because these gems are rare enough, only 50 pieces of this Royal handset will be made ever.

Lamborghini 8800 Sirocco from Nokia = $To be announced

Looks like the Nokia 8800 keeps coming out with new special editions. First it was The Gold Edition Nokia 8800 Phone, with a 24 karat skin as well as special charging station. I’m sure Goldfinger would have loved to get his hands on this before he pulled off his grand scheme of blowing up an atomic bomb inside Fort Knox.

Speaking of Goldfinger, the company has recently released a phone based on the type of car of that film, the Aston Martin. The Nokia 8800 Aston Martin Limited Edition, which was just the 8800 with the Aston Martin logo. I suppose James Bond would have bought this up if Q hadn’t given him a phone with a laser.

No wonder that Nokia 8800 Phone Wins Red Dot Design Award. After all, it has a sweet stainless steel and mineral glass design. The Nokia 8800 now has another special edition to brag about with the Nokia 8800 Lamborghini Sirocco phone. Like the previously mentioned Aston Martin, this guy has the award-winning style with the famous Lamborghini logo engraved. It also looks like ball bearings from the auto company to make the slider phone possible. (I wonder if it makes it slide better than the other Nokia 8800s out there?)

Let us not forget its phone uses as well. It has tri-band GSM coverage for up to five continents, as well as 128 MB of internal memory. Like its color TFT display, protected by scratch-resistant sapphire coated glass. It also has a 2 megapixel camera, as well as an integrated digital MP3 player. This is in addition to Bluetooth, xHTML browsing, Instant Messaging, video streaming services, as well as data transfer over EDGE, GPRS, or TCP/IP.

This Lamborghini 500-piece limited edition will also feature Lamborghini graphics as wallpapers, screensavers, ringtones, and even has a short documentary video about the Lamborghini. No word on the price, but I’m sure it’s quite expensive. However, who knows if these collectors edition cell phones will go up in value over the next few decades.

Bang & Olufsen (Samsung) Serene = $1,250

It looks like a concept phone.. but it isn't. It looks like a hoax.. but it isn't. What this is though is the fruit of a collaboration between Samsung and Bang and Olufsen to come up with a completely novel approach to mobile phone design.

 The Bang and Olufsen Serene has several novel features. Look at the photograph on the right and you might think that the phone was upside down. It isn't - B&O really have designed the Serene so that in general use the screen is at the bottom. This cleverly stops the screen from getting greasy when you talk on the phone. In fact, you can use the phone either way up as the handset can invert the screen display. This topsy-turvy approach probably explains the circular keypad, but what you can tell from the stills photo is that the round thing in the middle is actually a iPod-style rotator that selects menu options. The circular arrangement of keys on the Serene also conceals a loudspeaker.

We mentioned the iPod, and you'd think a handset like this would make a fantastic iPod killer, especially with the Bang and Olufsen name behind it. But the B&O Serene ins't a music phone at all. It does have a camera, but it's only a 0.3 megapixel VGA resolution device. The display is quite high resolution though, it's a 2.1" display with a wide 320x240 pixel arrangement in 262,000 colours. It has tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900), a WAP 2.0 browser, email client and Bluetooth. B&O say that they wanted to keep the handset simple by including only the basics, but as the Serene will cost €1000 when it comes out, you might expect more.

There's a toblerone-shaped docking station/charger too, so that the Serene can be used on a desk. There's also a DECT docking station that allows users to synchronise the phonebook in the Serene with a B&O DECT system. The B&O Serene weighs 110 grams and measures 65x70x24mm when closed. Talktime is 3 hours with 10 days standby time.

The Bang and Olufsen Serene will be available sometime during Q4 2005 in B&O retail outlets and from selected Samsung partners in Europe, Russia and the Ukraine.
